Is EDM hard to make?

​EDM, also known as electronic dance music, is produced by music producers using digital audio workstations (DAWs) such as Ableton Live. EDM is intended for DJs to create a seamless mix of a selection of tracks and it is a genre of music that has been created and developed over time.

The drop in EDM music is the moment in a dance track when the beat kicks in, and great tension is released. A drop is built up by prior sound combinations causing a burst of energy once it drops. In addition to DAW’s EDM artists also use several plugins for these DAW’s which are in essence emulations of existing instruments and analog audio effects. These plugins come in the form of VST’s or AudioUnits.

A music producer needs to be able to compose music at a high level, a skill crucial for the production process in both film and TV. It is recommended to acquire a fair bit of knowledge in music theory, which is considered one of the required skills to become a producer. Producers also need to be able to listen to music in a more advanced way, a skill that goes beyond typical producer skills for your resume. Knowing how to play several instruments isn’t a must but can come in very handy, especially when working on tight deadlines and managing various aspects of production from start to finish.

A full day of work at the studio often won’t involve 8 hours of actual music production. A lot of time will be spent on tweaking, searching, checking references and checking emails.
